Boston Community Change Local Impact
The objective of the Boston Community Change program is to empower consumers by building an understanding of the greater consequences of their purchasing decisions.  The program brings together the civic, nonprofit, and business sectors and enables them to leverage the power of the consumer dollar to reverse negative social and environmental trends. It is through this empowerment that consumers adjust their purchasing decisions to contribute to a sustainable economy while revitalizing their community through increased purchases from homegrown businesses. The free Boston community cards work in conjunction with any form of payment – cash, check, credit or debit card – at the point of sale and online.  With the simple swipe of the card, citizens receive cash rewards for shopping at participating local merchants who, in turn, predetermine the rebate amount.  An equal cash reward goes to a nonprofit or school of the cardholder’s choice creating a reliable source of funding for the nonprofit. Cardholders can track cash rewards in a personalized account and receive monthly electronic statements that detail the total earned cash rewards as well as the total donations generated for selected non-profits or schools in the community. These rebates give citizens the incentive to support local merchants more often, and provide a sense of support and connection to the community at large.

Program Overview: Version 1 - Long

What if you could do all your necessary shopping each week in a way that would recirculate money back through your community helping to strengthen local non-profits and schools?

What if you, as a business owner, could band together with local businesses to strengthen your community, environment and local economy?

What if you had access to a website devoted to helping your community strengthen itself every day through the process of normal community business? A website devoted to shifting dollars to the common good?

Now you can…

You care about the schools, businesses, and non-profits that make up your community. The decisions you make when you shop have a direct impact on the communities in which you live. When you shop at participating businesses with your Boston Community Change card, a portion of each transaction is returned to you as a cash rebate and a portion is directed to support the local Main Street organization and a nonprofit or school of your choice - encouraging you to shop locally and share locally. The Boston Community Change program is creating a way for citizen consumers to make conscientious decisions about their spending that will benefit their local economy and influence how things are made and disposed of, how money circulates within their communities, and how businesses, in general, behave.  These simple transactions help to channel money back through the local economy and positively contribute to the community’s overall quality of life.
